Cheilocostus speciosus

Cheilocostus speciosus

$5.00

One packet contains 20 seeds.

The crinkled texture of Cheilocostus speciosus’ white flowers resembles crepe paper, giving the plant its common name ‘Crepe ginger.’ Though referred to as one, it is not in fact a true ginger from the Zingiberaceae family, belonging instead to Costaceae. The species is distinguished by its stems which grow in a corkscrew shape, creating dramatic spirals of large leaves. It reaches 2 m (7 ft) tall but can be kept significantly smaller as a potted plant. Flowering begins with red cone-shaped bracts from which the translucent white flowers emerge. The red cones remain after the flowers have faded, providing long-lasting ornamental value. Crepe ginger is native to Southeast Asia, and it is cultivated throughout India where the rhizomes are used in Ayurvedic medicine. The plant grows best in part shade and moist, fertile soil, but it can also be grown in full sun with enough watering.
