Craibia brownii
Craibia brownii
A slow-growing tree native to tropical East Africa, Craibia brownii provides shade and beauty to gardens with clusters of pink-tinged white flowers among dense light-green foliage. It is well-branched and rounded in shape, growing from 6 to 20 m tall (20 to 66 ft), with smooth, grey bark that flakes in older trees. The fruits are flat, woody pods containing two to three seeds, which are edible with long cooking. White and fine-textured, its hard wood is used as tool handles, utensils, building poles, and firewood. C. brownii’s natural habitats are dry and moist forests, between 1100 and 2100 m (3610 to 6890 ft) altitude, with annual rainfall a mean of 850 to 1400 mm (33 to 55 in). It thrives in full sun in well-drained, loamy soil and is sensitive to frost but drought-resistant.
Minimum tested germination rate is 80%
