Delonix regia
Delonix regia
from $4.50
From the west coast of Madagascar, this species blazed across the world, each country christening it with their cultural explanation of its fiery flowers. Vietnam named it Phượng vĩ ("Phoenix's Tail"); the English call it Royal Poinciana; and in India it is known as the Krishnachura (the "Crown of Krishna"). At the end of the branches, the corymbs of flowers ignite with four spreading scarlet to blood-orange petals up to 8 cm (3 in) long, as well as a fifth upright petal called the standard.
