Lobelia giberroa is the first of the Giant Lobelias one encounters while climbing the Mountains of the Moon in Uganda. At altitudes of 2400 to 3000 m (7900 to 9800 ft), it is embedded around the wild montane forest of foothills and valleys, often shrouded in mist, and in the more elevated bamboo zone, amid their dense thickets. L. giberroa’s thick leaf-scarred stems rise up to 5 m (16 ft) and support rosettes of large light-green leaves as long as 80 cm (31 in). Atop this crown grows a terminal inflorescence—a flowering spike—adding as much as 3 m (10 ft) to the plant’s height, which at the end of its life blooms with small greenish white to blue flowers. The Bakonzo people living around the mountains sometimes use the plant in rituals to aid fertility.
