Parmentiera valerii

$12.00

One packet contains 6 seeds.

The volcanic mountains of Guanacaste in Costa Rica are the home of Parmentiera valerii, a rare tree endemic to the region. It is easily recognized on the forested slopes by its striking cauliflory, meaning that fruit and flowers grow directly out of the trunk. The abundant fruit look like oversized cucumbers, and they are an important source of food for the tapir—a large mammal resembling a pig with a trunk. Tapirs have a symbiotic relationship with the species, distributing seeds in exchange for a tasty meal. Parmentiera valerii, also known by the common name jícaro danto, produces white, bell-shaped blossoms emerging from its trunk, adding to the trees unique beauty.
